Stump Grinding & Removal in Brisbane

Powerful Stump Grinding in Brisbane

A leftover stump is more than an eyesore — it’s a trip hazard, a home for pests and fungi, and a stubborn obstacle to landscaping. At Arborist Brisbane, our powerful stump grinding equipment obliterates stumps well below ground level, leaving the surface smooth, clean, and ready for replanting or turfing.

Whether we removed the tree or you’ve inherited an old stump, we can grind it out completely and give you back usable ground. It’s one of the most satisfying jobs we do — turning an awkward, immovable obstacle into clear, level space in a matter of hours.

Why Grind a Stump?

Old stumps don’t just sit there quietly. Left in place, they can cause a surprising number of problems around your property:

  • Attract pests — termites, borers, and other timber-loving insects are drawn to decaying stumps, sometimes uncomfortably close to your home
  • Sprout regrowth — many species send up new suckers and shoots from the roots of a cut stump, meaning the tree tries to come back
  • Spread decay fungi — rotting stumps host fungi that can spread through your garden and to other plants
  • Block landscaping — stumps get in the way of new plantings, turf, paving, sheds, and construction
  • Create hazards — a low stump hidden in the lawn is a genuine trip and mowing hazard, and a liability if visitors are injured

Grinding removes the problem at the source and clears the way for whatever you want to do with the space next.

How Stump Grinding Works

You can dig or pull a stump out, but it’s messy, labour-intensive, and leaves a large crater and torn-up ground behind. Grinding is faster, cleaner, and far less disruptive. Instead of excavating the entire root ball, we reduce the stump and root flare to wood chip in place, leaving a neat, level surface with minimal disturbance to the surrounding area. For most residential and commercial properties, grinding is simply the better option.

Our grinders use a rotating cutting wheel fitted with hardened teeth that chip away at the stump and root flare. We work the stump down well below ground level — deep enough that you can lay turf, plant, or landscape over the top without the old wood interfering.

The process turns the stump into fine wood chips, which can be used to backfill the hole or removed entirely, depending on your preference. Either way, you’re left with a clean, level surface. Before we start, we check the area for underground services, rocks, and other obstacles so the job goes smoothly and safely.

Grinding Depth

How deep we grind depends on what you plan to do with the space. For laying turf or general landscaping, grinding a modest depth below the surface is usually plenty. If you’re planting a new tree or shrub in the same spot, or building over it, we grind deeper to clear the root flare properly. We’ll ask about your plans and grind to suit.

Access for Any Site

Brisbane properties come in all shapes and sizes, and not every stump sits in an easy spot. We have equipment sized for tight backyard access through narrow gates and side passages, as well as larger machines for bigger stumps and open sites. If a stump is reachable, we can grind it.

Narrow-access grinders can fit through standard gateways, which means we can reach stumps in backyards, courtyards, and between structures that larger machines simply can’t get to. For big stumps in open areas, our larger equipment gets the job done quickly.

Ready to Replant or Turf?

Once the stump is gone, the space is yours again. Many of our customers grind stumps specifically to lay new turf, extend a garden bed, or clear ground for paving and structures. We leave the site prepared so you can move straight to the next step.

If you’re planning to plant a new tree where the old one stood, let us know — we can grind deep enough and, in some cases, recommend how best to prepare the spot, since freshly ground areas benefit from soil improvement before replanting.

Why Choose Arborist Brisbane

We bring the right machine for the job, work cleanly, and finish properly. No half-done stumps, no mess left behind — just a smooth, usable surface. Our team is fully insured and experienced across all Brisbane suburbs.

We can also grind stumps as a standalone service — you don’t need to have used us for the original tree removal. If you’ve got old stumps left behind by someone else, or a stump that’s been sitting in the yard for years, we’re happy to clear them out.

FAQ

Stump grinding reduces the stump to wood chips using a grinding machine, leaving the roots to decay naturally underground. Full stump removal digs out the entire stump and root ball, which is far more disruptive and leaves a large hole. For most properties, grinding delivers a clean result with much less mess.

It depends on your plans for the area. For laying turf or general garden use, we grind a moderate depth below the surface. If you’re replanting a tree or building over the spot, we grind deeper to clear the root flare. Just let us know what you have in mind.

Grinding the stump and root flare prevents the visible stump from regrowing. Some species can occasionally send up suckers from remaining roots, but grinding dramatically reduces this. If regrowth appears, it’s easily managed.

That’s up to you. We can backfill the hole with the grindings to leave a level surface, or remove them entirely if you prefer a clean finish or plan to bring in fresh soil. The wood chips also make excellent mulch if you’d like to keep them.

Yes. We have narrow-access grinders that fit through standard gateways and side passages, so tight backyards, courtyards, and hard-to-reach spots are no problem. If a stump can be reached, we can grind it.

Most stumps are ground out within an hour or two, depending on size, species, and access. Very large stumps take longer. We’ll give you a time estimate as part of your quote.
