Do Multiple Stumps Cost Less Each?
Yes, and the saving is real. Getting the machine on site is the biggest fixed cost, so the price per stump drops once it’s there. Three or more in one visit works out noticeably cheaper each than separate call-outs.

Is Hiring a Stump Grinder Cheaper?
For one small, accessible stump, sometimes. For anything bigger, the saving usually disappears.
A hire grinder costs a few hundred dollars for a half day before you add towing, fuel, and the tree stump removal tools you’ll need alongside it. Hire machines are also smaller than commercial units, so a job an arborist finishes in an hour can take you most of a day. Three risks worth weighing:
- Grinders throw debris hard. A hidden rock or star picket can cause serious kickback.
- Hitting a service line is dangerous and expensive, and the liability is yours.
- Damage to fences, driveways or paving isn’t covered by anyone but you.
Grinding or Full Removal?
Full removal digs out the whole root ball. It needs an excavator, takes far longer, costs more, and leaves a crater to backfill.
Grinding chips the stump and root flare below ground and leaves deep roots to break down naturally. That’s enough for turf, garden beds and paving, which covers nearly every residential job. Full excavation is only worth it if you’re putting footings directly over the spot.

Doing nothing has a price too, and in Brisbane’s climate it arrives faster than most people expect.
- Termites and borers. A decaying stump is an established food source sitting in your yard, sometimes metres from the house. Treatment costs far more than grinding.

After the Grind: Turf and Replanting
The hole is filled with wood chip and soil, not topsoil, so it needs attention before you plant.
Wood chip draws nitrogen from the surrounding soil as it breaks down, which can leave new turf yellow and slow to establish. If you’re laying grass or planting straight away, ask for the grindings to be removed and the hole topped with quality soil instead. It costs a little more and saves a failed lawn.
Ground areas also settle over the following months as the remaining chip and roots decompose. Expect a slight dip and top it up rather than assuming the job was done badly.
Replanting a new tree in the exact same spot needs deeper grinding and soil replacement. Tell your arborist upfront so the depth is right the first time.
